Susan lake is located approximately approximately 85 km North of Fort McMurray and straddles the oil sands operations of three major oil sands companies. This massive aggregate operation is situated in the heart of existing oil sands developments, and is accessible via major roads year round.
The Susan Lake gravel lease is 5,880 acres in size. This aggregate operation is the largest open pit in North America, and provides the majority of gravel to oil sands companies in Northern Alberta.
Between 2003 and 2011 sales from Susan Lake averaged 6.20 million tonnes per annum. Approximately 100 million tonnes of sand and gravel have been removed from this pit since 1998. The aggregate was utilized by oil sands companies and other infrastructure projects in the Fort McMurray area.
Between 2009 and 2015, aggregate sales from Susan Lake averaged 8.29 million tonnes per annum.
